The complete discography of the classic California producer

Unreleased Recordings from 1966

Along Comes Mary Acetate1966—Publishing demo: This acetate was sold on eBay by a member of the Alexander [The Association] family ca. 2002. It contains a longer edit of the one featured on the Curt Boettcher CD Another Time.

  1. Along Comes Mary (Tandyn Almer)

1966—Sessions with Victoria Winston: It's mentioned in many Boettcher career writeups of his work with Victoria Winston & their Summer's Children singles: "Everybody's Been Talking / A Summer's Song" and "Milk and Honey / Too Young to Marry."

1966—Sessions with David Lindley: Around the same time—as the Boettcher bios describe—Curt used his last $85 dollars to record a demo; a demo which he played for Steve Clark & opened the door to work with Our Productions. Just what this demo was hasn't been revealed in any reissue liner notes or recent articles on Boettcher.

But in his interview with Christopher Peake in 45-45 (Nov/Dec 1984/85), Curt went into a bit more detail, recounting the $85 demo story. Recalling the session was at Paramount Recorders, he probably cut two or three songs in total, and the tune which floored Steve Clark apparently was a cover of The Coasters' "I'm a Hog for You." The legend regarding Clark seems a bit of hyperbole, though. Why wouldn't Winston—his new musical partner—be included on such an important recording? After all, according to the story, both Boettcher and Winston were signed to Our Productions contracts. To add further confusion, who played on these "impressive" demos? And who's "leftover studio time" was it at Paramount (which Boettcher mentions in 45-45)?

A possible answer could be David Lindley. Lindley, later of The Kaleidoscope, apparently was produced by Boettcher and Winston ca. early 1966, where the song "I'm a Hog for You" was performed. The session includes:

  1. I'm a Hog for You (Jerry Lieber / Mike Stoller)
  2. Little Orphan Annie (David Lindley / Solomon Feldthouse / Maxwell Buda / Chris Darrow / John Vidican)
  3. Move on Down the Line (Chris Darrow)
  4. Egyptian Gardens (David Fieldhouse)
  5. Irish with Sitars [several songs]

"Move on Down the Line" was later released on The Kaleidoscopes' Side Trips (1967) as "Pulsating Dream;" "Egyptian Gardens" appeared on the same album.

  1. Great research... Those Since demos have to be the new Boettcher Holy Grail-- now that Ballroom, Moses Lake, Misty Mirage, Chicken Little etc. have all come out.

  2. yeah! we need those since music demos!!!

  3. On the Since Demos, I assume "The Game" is Keeper of the Game, "Spinning, Spinning" is pretty obvious and "Richard Cory" is the Paul Simon song. Can anybody identify the others? I checked some of them and don't even see them in the ASCAP or BMI databases!
